IWC Big Pilot Edition Markus Buhler - TURBINE MOVEMENT - RARE SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION - (ONLY 12 PIECES!!!) - Reference: IW5003
There is such a cool and unique story behind this watch that we would like to share with you:
Markus Buhler, an apprentice watchmaker working for IWC back in 2003, designed and invented what is called the "turbine" movement during an apprenticeship competition where he took first prize at the Prix IFHH de I'Horlogerie. IWC, so impressed with the victorious and innovative movement that beat out 63 other competitors, decided to launch a model of its own honoring the triumph and incorporating the movement into a Special Edition Big Pilot Series of just 12 watches. Commonly known within IWC circles as the "Buhler project", Buhler along with other highly motivated apprentices worked tirelessly to perfect the movement and ensure all twelve of the watches had undergone the most stringent testing and quality controls standards - consistent with all IWC timepieces. In late 2008, IWC released the IWC Big Pilot Edition "Markus Buhler".
If you liked the Big Pilot before, you will absolutely love this "eye-catcher". On first glimpse of the dial just above the six o'clock position, you will immediately catch the "bronze casted" seconds indicator which rotates and functions in the form of a seconds indicator. It is actually a miniaturized replica of an aircraft turbine engine. The heart of the watch, viewable through a sapphire exhibition caseback, incorporates the spring barrel and ratchet wheel, which are skeletonized in the form of blade wheels. This, combined with an applied metal ring, come to resemble a miniaturized aircraft turbine engine. Think about it like this: the spring barrel you typically see in other movements is actually replaced with a miniaturized version of a turbine engine in a passenger jet...It is absolutely a unique concept, proprietary to IWC and something you will not see anywhere BUT HERE AT WATCH U WANT!!!
