Insider’s Guide to Panerai Straps As I was reviewing Watchuwant’s current inventory of Panerai watches, I was awestruck at the plethora of Panerai straps and buckles available today.  Searching through our inventory of Panerai watches, I was confused and bewildered trying to keep straight which straps went on which watches and with which buckles.   It used be so simple; a 44mm Luminor case fit a 24mm lug width strap and a 40mm Luminor case fit a 22mm lug width strap.  Along those same lines, if the watch was automatic, it was classified as a Contemporaire,” or “contemporary,” style and came...

BY OJ WHATLEYPart of the 1993-present civilian-era culture of Panerai is and has always been the easy inter-changeability, versatility and availability of straps made exclusively for wear on Panerai watches.  So much so that it spawned an entire universe of aftermarket custom strap makers devoted to producing straps exclusively designed to be worn on Panerai watches. Many of these custom straps celebrate the history and tactical heritage of Panerai.  Today, there are custom Panerai straps made from almost every material imaginable including leather taken from vintage WW2 ammunition...

By OJ WhatleyThe PAM 163 is a very unique special edition Panerai Radiomir Chronograph made for the F series (2003-2004 production year) in only 230 pieces. There are many details about this watch which make it a very unique and interesting novelty in the Panerai catalog. This watch is powered by the extremely rare Valjoux manual winding column wheel chronograph movement with date indication, Valjoux 234 Caliber. In 2003, leading up to the release of the PAM 163, Panerai still had not released their in-house movements nor did they have their own manufacture, so it was not out of the ordinary...

By OJ WhatleyPanerai PAM 580 – Q series made in only 500 Pieces The standout visual signature of this watch is the electric blue chronograph seconds hand. In previous Panerai practice, blued hands and accents were reserved for the Regatta Special Edition models, but here they make a welcome appearance on the PAM 580 in combination with the ‘dirty brown’ tinted luminescence. The aesthetic tandem lends this contemporary chronograph a vintage look and feel. The 580 has a super clean open dial—so much so that the absence of chronograph sub dials makes this watch easy for the uninitiated mistake...

Panerai 2014 Classic Yachts Challenge Special Edition aka PAM 571 – P series. What is most interesting about this watch is that it is likely the most limited production Regatta special edition ever made.  PAM 571 was made in a special limited edition of only 50 Pieces whereas previous Regatta special editions were produced typically in an edition of 500 Pieces.  The PAM 571 was released to commemorate Panerai’s 10 year anniversary of sponsoring the Classic Yachts Challenge Racing Series for the past 10 years (2005-2014).  The PAM 571 features a 47mm luminor 1950 case in titanium powered by...

A topic of discussion that is often misunderstood or confused is Panerai's release of OOR or 'Out of Range' watches. What are OOR watches and what do they represent, where do they come from and what makes them special? First, OOR stands for 'Out of Range.' OOR watches refer to limited micro edition releases of discontinued or one-time release Special Edition Panerai watches. OOR watches are released typically several years after the initial release or discontinuing of a particular PAM reference number. Just to clarify, there are no hard or fast rules as to OOR watches...

There seems to be a lot of confusion between the Panerai Radiomir SLC models, the PAM 425 and the PAM 449.  This is compoundED based on the fact that they were both released at the same time for the 'O' Series (2012-2013 production year) and they both look so similar.  Yes, they both feature the same simplified sandwich SLC style dial, the same 3 days manual winding P.3000 movement, and both are housed in the same 47mm stainless steel Radiomir case with see thru sapphire casebacks.  But that is where the similarities end.. Only when you have the ability to compare...

By Seth TilliWhen you start talking about innovation and great engineering in the world of horology, the name Francois-Paul Journe is sure to come up. F.P. Journe is driven by the desire to innovate and create something new, a watch or movement design that has not been done before - even by him, so all of his watches are new inventions designed and executed by him and his team at his manufacture in Geneva. The company tagline is “Invenit Et Fecit”, translated to “Invented and Made”.As one grows their collection, certain complications are always on the list and annual calendars are one of the...
